Total vacancies and category split

SSC’s notice-board PDF is titled ‘Tentative Vacancies for the recruitment of Junior Engineer Examination, 2026’. Its last row gives the total: 1,699 tentative vacancies, spread over 20 post entries in 12 departments. Counting by post, 1,237 are Junior Engineer (JE) posts and 462 are SA posts in the India Meteorological Department.

The category-wise split in the total row is:

  • UR: 718
  • OBC: 462
  • SC: 245

  • EWS: 134

These five add up to 1,699. The list also has four more columns: OH 32, HH 14, VH 1 and Others 13 (total row). The list does not explain these abbreviations, so we show them as printed.

What ‘tentative’ means and what the list does not say

Tentative means the numbers are provisional, not final. This PDF has no separate note on how or when the final numbers will be fixed, and it carries no ‘as on’ date. Do not treat any figure as confirmed.

The list also does not give the pay level, age limit, educational qualification, fee, selection stages, or state-wise or zone-wise vacancies. For these, read the official notices on ssc.gov.in.

How to read the list and what to do next

  1. Open ssc.gov.in and find ‘Tentative Vacancies of Junior Engineer Examination, 2026’ on the notice board.
  2. Find your department and post (C, E, M and so on) in the table and read the category columns.
  3. Note that Border Roads Organization posts are for male candidates only.
  4. Remember that the numbers are tentative.

The online application for this exam closed on 22 September 2026, and SSC has proposed Paper-I (computer based) for 2 to 6 November 2026. Details are in our SSC JE 2026 guide and SSC exam schedule guide. Use only the official website, ssc.gov.in.
